History

Today, Singa Airlines Limited

Singapore’s first carrier was Siam Airways, which commenced operations in the 1930s and served Malaysia and the East Indies until 1959. These operations under British Airways from 1959 to 1965 merged with Thomas Cook Airlines.

Singapore’s second carrier was Air Asia, which commenced flights from 1978 under a subsidiary of Air Asia (Malaysia) Berhad. Air Asia was also named before it changed its name in 1989 and became Singapore Airlines. In 1998, this subsidiary was rebranded as SIA Holdings International and became part of Singapore Airlines on 1 February 1999.

Singapore Airlines has been a significant player in Southeast Asia since the 1960s. It began operating flights to Penang Island and later Kuala Lumpur with its fleet of piston-engined aircraft. By the end of 1968, it had grown to become the largest low-cost carrier in Southeast Asia by volume and revenue. In 1990, it was one of three airlines serving Jakarta International Airport for direct flights between Jakarta and Singapore; another route, to Tanjung Pandan Airport in Malaysia’s Pahang state, was added later that year. It formed part of AirAsia in 2001 when it purchased eight Airbus A320 aircraft from TAM (now TransAsia Airways).

Passenger Experience

Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA) was established in January 1995. Its roots can be traced to the founding of SIA Air in 1948 as SIA Flight Services. The airline was officially incorporated as a public company on 15 June 1994.

The Singapore Airlines Group has over 1,000 aircraft and serves more than 145 destinations in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America with flights to more than 180 cities in 50 countries.

Singapore Airlines was the first Asian airline to be granted a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) to fly into Kansai International Airport (KIX). Before that, all flights from Singapore had to stop at the Johor-Singapore International Airport for clearance before flying into KIX.

Singapore Airlines is currently the largest airline in Southeast Asia by shareholder equity and one of the top 10 airlines worldwide by market capitalization. It is also ranked the 5th largest domestic carrier worldwide by revenue passenger-kilometres flown annually.

It has a fleet of around 1,000 aircraft, including 777 wide-body aircraft and Boeing 747s, which carry nearly ten million passengers per year. It has been involved since 1947 in commercial aviation activities such as cargo operations, helicopter services and air ambulance services under its predecessor companies before establishing its airline operations later on.

In addition to its business interests, SIA also holds 51% stakes in three other airlines: Emirates, Cathay Pacific Airways, and Asiana Airways, which are wholly owned subsidiaries of SIA Group, respectively, with total shares of approximately 19%, 21% and 32%. SIA owns a 31% stake each in Emirates Airline Ltd., Cathay Pacific Airways(Hong Kong) Limited… The remaining stake is held by Airbus SAS, which has 66% shareholding through its subsidiary AIGA Airbus SAS.

SIA Group started operations on 26 September 1971 with Boeing 707-120E aircraft leased from Pan American World Airways. By 1976 it was operating 29 Boeing 707-200B aircraft for cargo transport between Singapore and Bangkok. In 1977 it began working scheduled services between Singapore and Bangkok via Hong Kong using Lockheed L-188 Electras leased from British Overseas Airways Corporation under Air Service Agreement (ASA). In 1981 it expanded its services by hiring an additional 12 Boeing 707-300B aircraft built at Airbus Industrie’s Alenia Aeronautica facility near Milan, Italy. By 1986 it had taken over all scheduled flights between Bangkok and Singapore. This

According to its 2015 Annual Report, SIA’s brand equity stood at $2.6 billion, making it one of the world’s largest airlines by brand equity. Its fleet consists of Airbus A330-300, Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

 

New Routes and Future Plans

The carrier is one of the largest in the region, with a fleet of more than 300 aircraft and around 50,000 employees. It faces stiff competition from regional airlines such as AirAsia, Silkair and Tiger Airways Indonesia – which have recently expanded their network to meet increasing demand.

Singapore Airlines has updated its plans to expand its operations away from its hub at Changi Airport.

At a press conference held on Thursday (7 November 2014) at the airline’s headquarters in Seletar, Changi Airport City announced plans to launch a new low-cost route between Singapore and Jakarta.

As well as other routes between Jakarta and Singapore and also Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta. These new routes will be flying by Airbus A320 aircraft with a seating capacity of up to 180 seats per plane on each course. In addition, the airline will also be launching an additional daily flight from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur this year with Airbus A330 aircraft.

The airline has continued to fly daily flights between Jakarta and London’s Gatwick Airport for another year after having previously operated these services for just three months in 2013.

Singapore Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Christoph Mueller said: “We are very pleased with these new destinations as we extend our reach into south-east Asia. It has routes throughout Southeast Asia and globally while providing Singaporeans with direct access to London’s vibrant commercial aviation market.”

The airline has also launched weekly flights between Singapore and Lusail, another Qatar Airways subsidiary located in Doha, starting Tuesday (21 November 2014). This service will operate via its existing Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which provides more intercontinental travel options than the A350XWB aircraft currently used by QATAR AIRWAYS. The A320 aircraft that were previously used on these routes are being replaced by Airbus A330-200 planes which offer fewer seats but faster travel times than Boeing 777-300ER planes previously used on these routes. Singapore Airlines Group would like passengers who fly QATAR AIRWAYS to use this new service because it offers better choices for intercontinental travel where passengers can choose between using air transport or land transport options depending on whether they want to go via land or sea transport if they don’t want to switch carriers or are not comfortable flying air transport if they need comfort or style but don’t want speed travelling time!

Sia’s logo consists of an aircraft model bussing up ahead that appears like a girl holding a tablet computer & other items. That, along with her hair reminiscent of that worn by Abigail Breslin, accents her presence & makes her appear more “cool” than anyone else on Sia’s planes ..
